Project Description

Port Fender Replacement, Port of Pensacola

This project entailed the sequenced installation of 1235 feet of new driven steel pile and timber fender system at three contiguous berths, 2, 3 and 5, within the Port of Pensacola.

Vortex coordinated this project closely with the Port to allow for minimal disruption to the vessel berthing schedule and completed it ahead of schedule.

We supplied and installed 137 prefabricated fender H-piles, each 70’ long, using a land based crawler crane with a vibratory hammer set in fixed leads in order to meet critical installation tolerances and a back-batter. Due to subsurface obstructions, over 50% of the piles required pre-drilling.

A treated timber fender system with walers, consisting of 12”x12” timbers and chocks, was then installed to the driven steel piles thereby providing 100% wharf face protection. This work was accomplished from scaffolds suspended from the bull rail.

The project was delivered to the owner ahead of schedule, without any safety infractions or incidents.
