Project Description

Point Potrero Wharf Repair

As prime contractor, Vortex worked in close collaboration with the Owner and design engineer, Liftech Consultants, Inc. to rehabilitate this historic World War II era marine terminal. Located within the Port of Richmond, this terminal is part of a port and rail infrastructure facility for use by Honda Motors as a primary West Coast delivery point.

The scope of work included extensive structural refurbishment and replacement of reinforced concrete piles, caps and deck; construction of new transverse reinforced concrete girders; spall and crack injection repair; and installation of new mooring and fender systems. Due to the commercial imperatives of opening the facility as early as possible for ship discharging, the berth redevelopment was phased to allow operations to commence prior to final completion of the work.

This challenging and labor intensive marine project was completed ahead of schedule, without a single incident or injury, and clearly demonstrates the economy of rehabilitation of older marine terminals for modern use in certain sectors. The Richmond City Council, the Port of Richmond, Auto Warehousing, and the BNSF Railway held a grand opening on September 14th, 2010 to commemorate the new terminal and Honda’s return to Richmond.
